Why do some Native American tribes wear their hair in braids?

Is there a spiritual history behind it? I'm researching.

Why do cowboys wear cowboy hats? The significant meaning behind hair is not that it's braided, but long. Short is shunned against for both male and female. Long hair is considered very attractive for both sexes in traditional style with or without braids. Having long hair is a very sacred thing which demonstrates identity and pride of the native people.

I took many Native American courses when I was in college, and that never came up. My guess would be to keep it out of their faces.

Custom, tradition, spiritual aspect. Similar to why people begin locking their hair. I have locs and they are for spiritual reasons- physical expression of returning to one's roots, and self-acceptance and pride.
